I have just built my new machine with 64 bit Windows 7, installed the 64 bit version of RDtabs latest rev, imported my favorites and it fails to connect to any machine via rdp. It also has a skewed display of the configurations (like they are typed to far to the left of the window). I tried creating a new favorite to troubleshoot but still get the same response. It sits there forever at the Connecting to x.x.x.x pane.
This is running on a quad core hp machine with 4 gig of mem.
any assistance is greatly appreciated.
thanks

Can you attach a screenshot of the display? Also, what version of RD tabs are you running? Finally, in the About page under the Help menu, what does it say for "Using RDP Control?"

Certainly here is the attachment. In the About it says version 2.1.21 x64 and states using RDP contol:unknown.
thanks

The strange offset is really peculiar. I don't know what would cause that.
However, if it says "Unknown" then it is not finding the Remote Desktop libraries on your machine. Try the following to fix it. Open a command prompt AS ADMINISTRATOR (important!) and then go to the "\Program Files\Avian Waves\RD Tabs 64" folder. Type "regtsax.exe register" without the quotes and hit enter. You should see "Attempting to register Windows Default RDP ActiveX Control. Please wait... Finished."
Let me know if that helps any of your problems.

Does the Microsoft remote desktop client work? (mstsc.exe)
Your Windows installation may be corrupted somehow...

yes the desktop client works great and I downloaded some product called terminals and it works also. I prefer yours as it is much more intuitive.

That surprises me that Terminals works when RD Tabs does not as we both use the same interop calls to do Remote Desktop. Well, at least they did last time I checked.
Yes, I find RD Tabs more intuitive too, which is why I wrote it that way! :-D
Now, back to your problem. Do a full uninstall of RD Tabs and make sure that all the program folders and profile folders are cleaned up.
First, back up your settings and favorites using RD Tabs' export features.
Next, uninstall RD Tabs From Programs and Features
Next, delete all files in...
c:\Program Files\Avian Waves\RD Tabs
%localappdata%\Avian_Waves\RDTabs.exe_***SOME RANDOM GUID***
Finally, make sure RD Tabs does not show up in the Programs and Features list by refreshing it (make sure the uninstaller didn't get corrupted)
Okay, now reboot.
Open an adminstrator command prompt.
Type...
regsvr32 %windir%\system32\mstscax.dll
Reboot again!
Re-download RD Tabs (in case the installer is corrupted - also latest version is 2.1.22)
Install.
Try it now.

The two windows in task manager are normal. The second one is used for RD Tabs to recover from errors which involve low window handles and related resource management errors.
Try using the 32-bit client and see if you have the same problem. I bet Terminals is compiled as 32-bit. You can check by using taskman to see if "*32" is after it. RD Tabs 32-bit should run just fine under 64-bit -- it's just that it runs under syswow instead of native, so it's theoretically lower performance. The main reason I have the two versions is that older OS's (XP), I had to bundle a DLL for interop where the 32-bit and 64-bit versions were different. I don't have to do that for Vista and newer, and actually the installer doesn't even install it for new OS's. Still, natively compiled should be higher performance, so that's why I haven't gone back. 🙂

By 32-bit client, I mean the RD Tabs 32-bit version. In case I wasn't clear. 🙂

I am also having trouble running RD Tabs under Windows 7 Professional 64-bit. I have tried both 32 and 64-bit versions of the 2.1.22 client (after first trying 2.1.21 since there was no link to .22 on the page), and various compatibility modes for each with no luck. Under all tests, the application loads fine but hangs on "Connecting to server..."
I did try the below suggestions (uninstall, clean folders, regsvr32, etc).
As a side note, with my display settings, the menu bar does not show until I hover over it, and some of the dialog formatting is slightly misaligned. The "General" tab of Tools/Options also runs off the bottom with no scroll bar.
Hope this information is helpful to you. I'll be check back on this thread for possible solutions. Thank you.

CC - Please post a screenshot. The graphics issue sounds like it may be a DPI issue. Are you running in a non-standard DPI? The connection info -- I have no idea. I can't replicate the issue on any test machine (and I deploy RD Tabs to a lot of machines at my organization). Have you tried connecting to different remote machines? Does it always hang on one in particular?

Thanks Timothy, that's precisely it. Lowering my setting back to 100% fixes the alignment AND the connection problem. (At 125% the connection hangs on all machines.) I switched it back and forth a second time just to make sure. So for now I'll need to choose between eye strain and RD Tabs. I find hi-res monitors great for images and multiple windows, horrible for reading text.
Any idea if this can be worked out? There is no problem with mstsc on either setting.

It fixed the connection problem?! That is incredibly surprising. I am well aware of the DPI display problem and had planned to work on it after finishing the initial release of 2.2. I can't imagine how the DPI problem is affecting the connection. I'm going to have to set my test computer to 125% DPI and start debugging. I must be using some property of some control in some way during the connection process. Thanks a lot for digging into this. I'm sure I'll be able to figure it out when I start testing.

OMG!
I had the exact same symptoms that CC had and yes I have wide panel flat panel monitors running at 125%. I turned mine down to only 100% and it fixed all my issues also. Now I can see everything and my connections work again.
This is some weird behavior!
Thanks for the support and I'm very glad I wasnt the only person displaying these symptoms.

I had to take it one step farther. If I set my display to 150% RDtabs works fine also.
So it appears it may be some kind of math issue with 125%?
100% works
125% does not work
150% works

Timothy,
My first post and I think RDTabs is the most usefull tool since the hammer. Any progress on this or did I miss a solution elsewhere; running in 100% is hard on the
eyes on a little lappy screen..
