I see the "RD Tabs Resource Manager" in my task manger. The performance in RD Tabs is no horrible. I used to be able to open up an entire folder that contained 6 separate connections just fine. Now when I do that the program hangs for ever and I have to kill it. The only way I can get it work right is by opening each connection individually. When I do that, it hangs for a while and then opens the connection.

This is a brand new laptop... Dell Latitude D830 running Vista SP1. This same issue happend with my older Dell Latitude D820 running Vista (no SP1). Could you please help me as I LOVE your program and this is crippling me now.

EDIT....

I am also having major performance issues with Internet Explorerer 7. I have not clue if the two are tied together somehow but I figured I would mention it.

Your problems with IE7 and RD Tabs may be related in that they are both symptoms of the same underlying cause.

There are performance issues with Remote Desktop post-Vista SP1 and post-XP SP3. They are related to underlying changes in the Remote Desktop API which is out of my control and affects all RDP 6.1 based applications. Mainly the "slow downs" are only on the first connection as it is being established (about a 1-2 second pause) when there are no connections already established. If RD Tabs hangs where it completely freezes for over a minute, this is new to me and may be a bug. I haven't seen that in my tests, however, so I can't replicate it here. If it's simply taking a long time (say, opening an entire folder with 10 connections taking 15 seconds to complete), that is to be expected with RDP 6.1, unfortunately. :-(

Now, let's try to diagnose your problem here to see what is causing this and if there is anything we can do about it.

Are you running the 2.1.4 alpha test or 2.0.13? 2.0.13 is not RDP 6.1 aware (it will always fall back to RDP 6.0) and it may be having some issues with your post-SP1 machine. Why it also was slow on your Vista RTM machine, I'm not sure.

Have you installed any other 3rd party tools or software which may cause excessive CPU or memory load? (RD Tabs is fairly resource heavy because remote desktop in general is resource heavy and RD Tabs typically is hosting dozens of remote desktop connections at once.)

How much RAM do you have?

When you run Task Manager is RD Tabs constantly showing a large CPU usage (greater than 30% sustained when your remote connections are sitting idle)?

Is any other program showing a large CPU usage? After five or ten minutes after a reboot, your computer generally shouldn't show a larger than 10% CPU usage when idling (no program actively running a task). if any process is sustaining at a CPU usage rate higher than that for minutes when no tasks are being run, there may be a problem with that program hogging CPU.

I noticed you mentioned 'RD Tabs Resouce Manager in Windows Task manager' in the subject line. Do not mess with or kill that process! It sits idle 99.9% of the time, but if it detects your system running out of heap memory or window handles, it will assist you in cleanly shutting down RD Tabs (or other programs) to release the resource pressure and help prevent worse problems. It's only really needed if you connect to greater than 60 or 70 simultaneous remote desktops, but it is critical that it stays open while RD Tabs is open or RD Tabs may crash even under light loads.

No other programs are being run when I have issues, and when I do run progams its Outlook and internet explorer. The CPU usage floats areoun 4% when idlleing with RDTabs running with 6 sessions open. My machine has 4 gb of ram and a 2.4 gig Duo Centrino processor. The machine has plenty of horse power to run it. It used to run just fine but for whatever reason this changed. I have had SP1 from the first day I setup this laptop so the SP1 issue is most likely not the reason. Just seems weird that one day it runs fine and the next day its a dog. After the tabs load up it seems to run fine.

Should I try the alpha release?

It wouldn't hurt to try running the alpha release. It's pretty stable right now. I'm about to release a new one later today. If it's worse, you can uninstall it and reinstall the 2.0.x version.

For what ever reseason when I uninstalled IE Pro it worked fine. IE Pro is a cool add on for IE but has caused me issues with two different laptops boh running Vista. Guess its not very stable. Weird....

Thanks for posting the solution. I'm sure there are others who will run into the same problem at some point and will find that useful. I'm familiar with IE Pro, but never installed it. I'll have to install it on a test machine sometime and see if I can make RD Tabs play nice with it (work around IE Pro's bugs). Not a super high priority, but a definite intellectual curiosity for me. 🙂 Wouldn't be a bad idea to report this issue to the IE Pro team. It may affect other software using the MS Remote Desktop COM API.
